Alum and Her Mom, Establish a New Foundation March 31, 2014

The Red Tent Foundation, was recently created by Patricia Attman, MD, and Sarah Attman (01). The concept was inspired by Sarah’s experience as a female college student, where she sensed an underlying oppression based on gender. During biblical times, the red tent was a place where women gathered during menstruation, to be separate from the tribe during this time. It became a sanctuary of mutual support and friendship. The purpose of  The Red Tent Foundation “is to improve the lives of college students, by focusing on emotional health, spirituality, building authentic community, body image and facilitating authentic conversation about being a woman in today’s world. We implement these goals by traveling to college campuses throughout the country and setting up a physical red tent as both a symbol and an event space.”

Scene Around..at Amor & Exile reading. November 27, 2013

Filed under: Events,News,Scene Around,We are proud of our Alum — alumparentblogger @ 3:02 AM

Amor and Exile, coauthored by Nicole Salgado and KSDS alum Nathaniel Hoffman, is a collection of stories of US citizens who have fallen in love with and married undocumented workers. This leaves them caught in a state of legal limbo. And often necessitates them to spend years either separated or in exile.

Beth El and Chizuk Amuno co-hosted Nathaniel over the weekend, when he did a reading and led a discussion on his enlightening book.

Order or learn more about the book here.

Below are some photos from the event.

Filed under: News,Opportunites,We are proud of our Alum,Where are they now. — alumparentblogger @ 9:27 PM

Do you have a college senior this year?

If so, they may be interested in this program.

There are a number of KSDS grads who have gone through this excellent program and  Kevin Siegel (05) is doing it currently.

Today’s the big day: Applications are officially open for the AVODAH Fellowship, a selective new program for Jewish early-career professionals currently working to address the causes and effects of poverty in New York City.

The AVODAH Fellowship is a high-impact learning and community-building experience that will enable participants to sharpen their skills and analysis while expanding their personal and professional networks. Based on a curriculum grounded in Jewish thought and learning, the Fellowship will provide training and support to emerging Jewish professionals engaged in the antipoverty field.

Participants in the AVODAH Fellowship will gain from AVODAH’s 15 years of expertise in antipoverty leadership development through:
  • A Community of Mentors and Colleagues: Fellows will join an intentional Jewish community of experienced social justice leaders and build a support system that will nourish them personally, professionally, and spiritually.
  • Innovative Learning: AVODAH will provide fellows with regular seminars drawn from our cutting-edge curriculum, allowing them to engage in critical analysis about domestic poverty while viewing their work through a Jewish lens.
  • Connected for Life: Members of the Fellowship will be welcomed into the AVODAH alumni community, a network of hundreds of leaders who will provide community and support throughout their careers.

Full program and application information can be found at avodah.net/fellowship. If you have any questions, please contact Russ Agdern at apply@avodah.net.
